Glyphosate Dreams
August 29 through October 2
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 29 at 5:00 PM
ALEXANDER BREST GALLERY
Glyphosate Dreams visually translates the deadly herbicide glyphosate into chemically deteriorated images, a video installation and letterpress prints, reflecting on its consequences to body and land. The broad-spectrum herbicide glyphosate is the most-used herbicide in the world, known to cause cancer, with major implications for public health. A series of photographs physically deteriorates C-prints from Bitsicas’ family archive and EPA emails in glyphosate over time, resulting in ghost-like images. A series of letterpress prints features the deterioration patterns from the glyphosate-treated archival images and segments of a lake depth chart map. A video installation explores the impact of glyphosate on the common carp, projecting microscopic images at a larger-than-life scale.
A Collaboration with Computation
August 29 through October 2
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 29 at 5:00 PM
ALEXANDER BREST GALLERY
In A Collaboration with Computation, Matthew Mosher explores how algorithmic processes can lead to new visual forms. Using bespoke computer code, the artist writes programs that generate 2D and 3D models given a set of input parameters. By adjusting these parameters, each program can iterate through dozens of different forms. Mosher selects specific outputs based on their aesthetics, which are then made physical with a variety of traditional and digital fabrication processes. Mosher then applies traditional finishing methods to them. The work questions society’s reliance on dualistic thinking, specifically taking issue with the dichotomy of organic versus mechanical and handmade versus digital processes.

Philosophy Slam
Professor Nathan Richardson, Jacksonville University College of Law
You have to make sacrifices and spend resources today to make things better in the future. That’s true whether you’re getting an education, growing a business…or saving the planet. But how should we compare today’s costs to tomorrow’s benefits? It turns out this is a very tough problem, especially for long-term decisions that affect future generations, or existential risks — especially climate change. When does finance become philosophy? Was it always?

The War Over History and Civics Education in Florida
Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 PM
RIVER HOUSE
Philosophy Slam - Dr. Jesse Hingson, Professor of History
Since 2015, Florida has passed numerous laws that allow residents to challenge instructional materials, particularly textbooks. Supporters claim that these measures empower parents and citizens to protect children from harm while opponents argue that they have led to censorship. At first, most objections focused on textbooks discussing climate change and evolution. More recently, however, the law has been used to object to history and civics textbooks and, more broadly, how the past is taught. What lessons can we learn in the war over history and civics education in Florida?
